4 Tips on Getting Your First Tattoo

It's a fun experience going in and getting a tattoo. This is even truer if it's your very first tattoo! If that's the case, you need to go in with some rules of thumb to follow to make sure you make the right decision. Let's take a look at 4 points to keep in mind.

1. Don't use flash artwork. There is a lot of really good flash art work out there, but it would make your tattoo much more meaningful if you either altered an existing design to your tastes so that it's original or came in with an idea yourself.

2. Choosing the right artist. You'll be happier if you find an artist whose work you admire and sense of style you can envision in a tattoo for yourself. Many will enjoy the challenge of creating original work based on what you tell them or in conjunction with flash artwork. Feel free to ask an artist for their portfolio of work or search for them on line and see if they have an on line gallery.

3. Make the tattoo meaningful, but not hyper specific. This is code phrase for "think long and hard before getting someones name inked into your arm." Words and even obvious symbols you identify with have a way of making bad tattoos. Relationships change, interests change, people change - but tattoos do not. Consider wisely before declaring your loves name on your arm. One exception is getting kids names as tattoos; this is quite nice and personally meaningful and has no potential for regret.

4. Be ready for a little bit of pain but don't worry too much. It's true that tattoos do hurt, no one is going to doubt that. But look how common they are! Somehow everyone else was able to deal with the pain involved. With that in mind, realize you can too.

Finding a good artist and getting an original meaningful design makes for the best tattoos. Don't get impatient and just get anything - this is your body, this is your first tattoo: make it count!
